Activity 45

Hello children! 😊😉 How are you? This week we're going to do an activity about a National Holiday coming soon.

It's the Day of National Sovereignty in Argentina.

When is the Day of National Sovereignty?

'Día de la Soberanía Nacional' is on November 20th.

This holiday is celebrated on the fourth Monday in November.

This year the holiday is celebrated on November 23rd (2020).

Anniversary of the 1845 Battle of Vuelta de Obligado

History of Day of National Sovereignty

The holiday commemorates the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado. It took place on 20th November 1845 when the Argentine Confederation fought against an Anglo-French navy in the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado.

The Argentine Confederation lost the battle, but there is a saying 'lose the battle but win the war' and this was true in this case. The Anglo-French navy won the battle but many British and French soldiers died. As a consequence, they had to negotiate a treaty with Juan Manuel de Rosas, the Governor of Buenos Aires.

The battle was a key event. Argentina made efforts to protect regional industries from colonial powers by raising trading tariffs.

Rosas persuaded Uruguay and Paraguay to join the confederation with the idea to work against the French and British empire. Juan Manuel de Rosas led the battle.

20th November has been nationally observed as the Day of National Sovereignty

since 1974, but the fourth Monday only became a national holiday in 2010.

Independence day in Ecuador; Cuencano Abdon Calderon was the hero of the Battle of Pichincha against the Spanish

When independence was declared in 1809, Quito was the administrative center, or Royal Audience, of a large region that included all of modern day Ecuador. The declaration initiated a violent 12-year struggle by Spanish people, most of them aristocrats, versus the Spanish crown that concluded satisfactorily on May 24, 1822, at the Battle of Pichincha outside of Quito.

The final stage of Ecuador’s independence struggle was led by of Colonel Luis Urdaneta who had fought for the liberation of Guayaquil. His military force, called the Junta de Guayaquil or Division Protectora de Quito, advanced into the highlands liberating Cuenca, Riobamba, Ambato and Latacunga on his way to Quito.

Although Urdaneta was defeated by the Crown before he could take Quito, the movement maintained impetus on the coast where independence combatant received reinforcements.

After one failed attempt, General Antonio José de Sucre was victorious in the decisive Battle of Pichincha.

The hero of Pichincha was a young Cuencano, Abdón Calderón, who was badly hurt, continued to carry the Independence flag and motivated his compatriot rebels in the fight against the Spanish. Calderón died on June 7, 1822, fourteen days after the battle. Finally, Ecuador achieved Independence.

Parque Calderón in Cuenca is named in the hero’s honor as was Ecuador’s highest military honor, the Order of Abdón Calderón.
